About this experience

Description

Travel back in time on the island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving historic sites in Crete. From the small port of Elounda a boat takes you across the bay in about 15 minutes. The Venetians fortified the islet in 1579 with a fortress armed with 40 cannons, and its walls are among the best preserved in Europe. From 1903 to 1957 Spinalonga served as a leper colony, the last one in Europe. During the guided tour, which lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes, you will walk the old market street and see the hospital and the small houses where the community lived in isolation.

Back in Elounda you collect your take-away pita gyros and have free time to explore the village or swim in the clear waters of the bay.

The coach then continues to Agios Nikolaos, a town of about 14,000 inhabitants on the Gulf of Mirabello. At its centre lies Lake Voulismeni, said to have been formed by an earthquake. Enjoy a coffee, walk up for the view over the lake and harbour, or browse the shops in the shaded streets nearby.

The day ends with a stop at an olive oil factory in Malia, where you will learn how Cretan olive oil is made and taste it.
