Heraklion is the busiest city in Crete and the natural gateway for most visitors. The airport sits 5 km from the city center, and the port handles overnight ferries from Piraeus plus fast services to Santorini and Mykonos. For travelers who want to combine ancient history with beach time, Heraklion is the most efficient base on the island.
The Venetian Harbour — anchored by the 16th-century Koules fortress — is the photogenic heart of the city. Walking distance: the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (home to the Minoan frescoes and the Phaistos Disc), Lions Square, and 25th of August street with its Venetian arcades. The Palace of Knossos is 5 km inland — 20 minutes by bus or taxi — and remains the most-visited archaeological site in Greece.
For beach stays, Ammoudara begins on the western edge of the city — a long sandy strip with family-friendly hotels and easy bus links. Agia Pelagia, 20 minutes west, is a quieter cove with calmer water. To the east, Hersonissos and Stalis are the busiest tourist beach resorts with everything from all-inclusive families to nightlife.
Most visitors stay 2–4 nights in Heraklion as part of a longer Crete trip, splitting between the city and one of the western (Chania/Rethymno) or southern bases. For Knossos and the museum alone, a single full day works.
