About this experience
Description
A full day on the western side of Crete, combining its two most atmospheric towns with a swim stop at a freshwater lake. Heading west along the north coast you pass the Ida range and Psiloritis, the highest mountain of the island at 2,453 m, before reaching Rethymno. A short orientation is followed by free time to wander the old town, its narrow cobbled streets and hidden corners.
Next comes Chania, the second largest city of Crete. Its Venetian walls and harbour, narrow alleys and buildings from the Venetian and Ottoman periods are remarkably well preserved and take you straight back in time. The old harbour, where small fishing boats still moor, is the ideal spot for a coffee while watching city life go by. Nearby you will find the cross-shaped covered market and the famous leather street.
The last stop is Lake Kournas, the only natural freshwater lake on the island. Have lunch by the water if you wish, rent a pedal boat, walk along the shore or take a swim before the drive back.
