About this experience
Description
A day in the mountains of eastern Crete for lovers of tradition, mythology and wide-open views. The scenic route inland first brings you to the Monastery of Kera Kardiotissa. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary and run by nuns, it is known locally as "Little Lourdes" and remains a place of pilgrimage.
From there the coach climbs to the Lasithi Plateau, a cool, fertile plain that may once have been the crater of a volcano and was famous for its thousands of windmills. In the village of Psychro you visit the Greek Mythology Park (entrance included), where the gods and legends of ancient Greece are presented and you can taste local wine and olive oil. If you prefer, you can instead walk up to the Dikteon Cave, where according to myth Zeus was born (entrance fee not included). Please note that there is not enough time to do both.
A lunch break follows in one of the plateau villages, along with a visit to a traditional pottery workshop, a craft practised here for more than 8,000 years. On the way down, the views over the Pediada plain are among the finest on the island.

Good to know: The route includes winding mountain roads, so it is not recommended for guests prone to travel sickness or with mobility difficulties. High-heeled shoes, pets, non-folding strollers and electric wheelchairs are not allowed. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
