Where to stay in Peloponesse

The Greek mainland's heart — ancient Olympia, Mycenae, Mystras, and 1,200 km of coastline waiting to be discovered.

The Peloponnese is the southern peninsula of mainland Greece — connected to Athens by the Corinth Canal, three hours from the capital, and home to more major ancient sites than anywhere else in Greece. Olympia, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Sparta, Mystras — five UNESCO World Heritage sites within a single peninsula.

Nafplio on the east coast is Greece's most romantic small city — Venetian fortresses, neoclassical houses, an old town built on a peninsula jutting into the sea. Kalamata on the south-west is the second city of the Peloponnese, surrounded by olive groves (Kalamata olives originated here) and the beaches of the Messinian Bay. Pylos further south has one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. Monemvasia on the south-east is a Byzantine castle-town built into a cliff and accessed by a causeway — completely unique in the Mediterranean.

The Mani peninsula in the deep south is the wildest part of the Peloponnese — stone tower-houses, dramatic coastline, and a fiercely independent local culture. Costa Navarino near Pylos has put Messinia on the international luxury map. The mountainous central Arcadia region — Karpenisi, Dimitsana, Stemnitsa — is the place for stone villages and winter chestnut forests.

The Peloponnese rewards a road trip. Five days minimum, ten days ideal, two weeks fully covered. Many visitors fly into Athens, drive south, and base in two or three different areas (Nafplio + Kalamata + Monemvasia for example). Direct flights to Kalamata airport from many European cities in summer skip Athens entirely.

Frequently asked about Peloponesse

Where in the Peloponnese should I stay?

Nafplio for the most beautiful base in the east. Kalamata or Pylos for the south-west coast. Monemvasia for a unique 1–2 night stay. Olympia briefly for the ancient site itself. Most road trips combine two or three bases.

Is the Peloponnese worth visiting?

For history, road-trip lovers, and travellers who've been to the islands and want something different — yes. The Peloponnese has more major archaeological sites than the rest of Greece combined.

How many days do I need in the Peloponnese?

A five-day road trip from Athens covers Nafplio, Mycenae, Olympia. Seven to ten days adds Kalamata, Monemvasia, Mani. Two weeks lets you fully explore including Arcadia in the centre.

Do I need a car in the Peloponnese?

Essential. Public transport between major towns exists but reaching archaeological sites and quieter beaches requires a car. Road quality is generally good; the new Olympia and Kalamata motorways are excellent.

Is Monemvasia worth the detour?

Yes — it's one of the most unusual towns in the Mediterranean. A Byzantine castle-city built into a cliff, accessed by a long causeway. Stay overnight inside the medieval walls for the magic — when day-trippers leave the place becomes timeless.

When is the best time to visit the Peloponnese?

April–June and September–October. Summer (July–August) is hot inland (35°C+) but the coastal areas remain pleasant. Winter is mild on the coast and beautiful in the mountains.

How do I get to the Peloponnese from Athens?

Drive across the Corinth Canal (1 hour from Athens airport). Direct trains and buses also serve Nafplio, Patras, and Kalamata. Kalamata has its own international airport with summer charters.
