Where to stay in Thassos

A pine-clad island off northern Greece, where marble beaches, mountain villages and ancient ruins meet good-value stays.

Thassos lies just off the coast of northern Greece, a near-circular island of green hills, white-marble beaches and small villages that feels quite different from the more famous southern destinations. Its position in the northern Aegean keeps it cooler and lusher than the Cyclades, with pine forests rolling down to the coast and a single ring road that links every town and beach on the island. Easy ferry access from the mainland makes it especially popular with travellers from the Balkans and central Europe, drawn by the combination of natural beauty, history and reliably good value.

The island's main town, Limenas, often called Thassos Town, sits on the north coast and combines a small harbour with the most impressive ancient ruins in the region: a Greek agora, theatre and acropolis spread across the headland behind the modern town. The town beach is a short walk from the centre, and the seafront is lined with tavernas, ouzeris and the kind of relaxed cafes that mark a working Greek port. South and west, the coast unfolds into a string of resorts including Skala Prinos, Limenaria and Potos, while the east coast has the famous Golden Beach.

What makes Thassos memorable, though, is the inland half. Mountain villages like Theologos, Panagia and Potamia preserve traditional stone architecture, family tavernas and a slower pace; the marble quarries above Aliki shine bright white against the sea; and the Giola natural rock pool draws everyone with a camera. Expect a mix of family-run hotels, apartments, family-friendly all-inclusive resorts at Skala Prinos and a small but growing scene of boutique stays in the villages.

How to get to Thassos

The closest airport is Kavala International Airport (KVA) on the mainland, just 15 kilometres from Keramoti port. Direct flights from Athens run year-round and a wide network of seasonal European routes operate from spring to autumn. From the airport, a 20-minute taxi or bus reaches Keramoti, where car and passenger ferries shuttle across to Thassos's port of Limenas in around 40 minutes. The second option is Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), with a much wider international network but a two-hour drive west to Keramoti. Larger ferries from Kavala port also serve Thassos's Skala Prinos port, taking 75 minutes. There are no direct international flights to the island itself. A hire car or scooter is the easiest way to explore the ring road and inland villages.

Best beaches & things to do in Thassos

Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia) on the east coast is the headline stretch, a long arc of golden sand backed by pines with shallow water, beach bars and a strong family following. Just south, Paradise Beach is smaller and more cinematic, with crystal water and a striking pine-fringed setting. Marble Beach (Saliara) on the north coast is the photogenic showstopper, where centuries of marble quarrying have left a beach made of pale, glittering chips with translucent turquoise water.

The Giola natural rock pool near Astris in the south is the island's most photographed spot, a marine lagoon carved into the rock just above sea level. Aliki on the east coast is a tiny double-bay village set between sand and pebble beaches with Greek and Roman ruins on the headland. Skala Prinos, Pefkari and Potos suit families looking for organised resort beaches, while smaller coves like Livadi and Atspas reward a short drive off the ring road.

Best areas to stay in Thassos

Thassos Town (Limenas) is the most varied base, with a small harbour, the ancient agora, town beach and a wide choice of tavernas walkable from your door. Skala Prinos on the north-west coast has the highest concentration of family-friendly resorts and all-inclusive properties, with calm shallow water and direct ferry access to Kavala. Golden Beach on the east is the obvious beach-base choice, with apartments and small hotels backing onto the longest stretch of sand on the island. Limenaria in the south is the second-biggest town and has the best dining scene outside Limenas, while neighbouring Potos has a sand-and-pebble beach with a more lively atmosphere. Inland, the mountain villages of Theologos, Panagia and Potamia are ideal for travellers seeking stone houses, traditional tavernas and panoramic views.

Day trips from Thassos

The island ring road makes a full-day driving circuit easy: head clockwise from Limenas via Skala Prinos and Limenaria to Aliki and the Giola rock pool, then back through Golden Beach. Inland, the mountain village of Theologos, the former capital of Thassos, is a memorable lunch stop. The hilltop village of Panagia, just above Golden Beach, has a small museum and excellent bakeries. Boat trips around the coast leave from Limenas and Limenaria, calling at the most striking marble cliffs and beaches not easily reached by road. Back on the mainland, the city of Kavala with its Byzantine castle and aqueduct, the ancient site of Philippi and the Pangaion mountain wineries make rewarding day trips, especially for travellers spending more than a week on Thassos.

Practical tips for visiting Thassos

Euros only and cards are accepted in most hotels and tavernas, though smaller mountain villages and the boat to Marble Beach are easier with cash. A hire car or scooter makes Thassos much easier to explore; the ring road is well-paved and the inland roads are scenic but slow. Petrol stations are spread around the coast. The island is cooler and greener than southern Greece, so spring and autumn are pleasant rather than sharp. Mosquito repellent helps near the pine forests on summer evenings. Greek is the local language and English is well spoken in tourist areas, while Bulgarian and Serbian are also common among visitors.
