Where to stay in Elounda

Crete's most discreet luxury coast, ringed by clear water and looking across to the Spinalonga peninsula.

Elounda is a small village on Crete's north-east coast that has quietly become the island's most refined address. Curved around the protected waters of Mirabello Bay, with the fortified peninsula of Spinalonga rising just offshore, it has been a magnet for upscale travellers since the first grand resorts opened on its shores in the 1970s. The bay is unusually calm, the sea unusually clear, and the coastline lined with private beaches, sleek spas and adults-focused suites.

The village itself has kept its scale. A small harbour fans out into a stone-paved square, family-run fish tavernas spill onto the waterfront, and a stub of a causeway leads to a tiny islet where you can watch sunset over the bay. There are no high streets, no nightclubs and no flashy promenades; the energy sits in slow lunches, drinks at the harbour and long evenings on terraces with sea views. Most of the action happens behind the gates of the great resort estates north of the village, on the road toward Plaka.

This is a destination built for couples, honeymooners and families looking for high-end comfort with a quiet pace. Expect suites with private pools, beachfront villas, and adults-only properties with butler service and Michelin-trained kitchens, alongside mid-range stays in the village and a handful of family apartments. Beyond the bay, the rest of eastern Crete unfolds: the lakeside town of Agios Nikolaos is a 10-minute drive south, the Lasithi Plateau lies inland, and a boat across the bay reaches Spinalonga island, one of Crete's most atmospheric historic sites.

How to get to Elounda

Heraklion International Airport (HER) is the main gateway, around 70 kilometres west along the national highway. The drive takes 60 to 75 minutes by car or pre-booked transfer, with the final stretch winding up over a coastal pass before dropping into Mirabello Bay. Sitia airport (JSH) is closer at around 70 minutes east, but handles only Athens flights and a few seasonal routes. There are no scheduled ferries to Elounda; arrivals by sea typically dock at Agios Nikolaos or Heraklion. Most travellers arrange a private transfer through their hotel, since taxi ranks are limited and KTEL buses, while frequent between Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, run only a handful of services a day from Heraklion. A hire car is useful for exploring the wider coast.

Best beaches & things to do in Elounda

Mirabello Bay's protected waters make for some of the calmest swimming on Crete. The village itself has a small sandy beach at the harbour and a longer pebble stretch at Schisma, both with shallow entry and views across to Spinalonga. North along the coast road, a string of resort beaches takes over, most with sun loungers, fine pebble or imported sand and water that drops to deep blue within metres of the shore. Driros, Kolokytha and Plaka beach are the most accessible public stretches outside the resort gates.

The standout swim is Kolokytha, a sheltered turquoise lagoon reached only by boat from Elounda harbour or by a long walk along the salt flats and across the Spinalonga peninsula. Smaller coves dot the road toward Plaka, where the local taverna scene faces directly onto the bay. Across the salt flats, the area near the old windmills also makes a sunset photo stop.

Best areas to stay in Elounda

Elounda Village is the most sociable base, with tavernas, the harbour and small boutiques walkable from your door, and a sand-and-pebble beach beside the square. Many of the area's signature resort estates line the coast road north of the village toward Plaka, set on private peninsulas with their own bays, spas and several restaurants on site, ideal for couples and honeymooners who want everything inside the gates. Plaka itself is a smaller fishing settlement looking directly across to Spinalonga island, with a handful of intimate stays and excellent seafood tavernas. South of the village, the route toward Schisma and the salt flats has self-catering apartments and family villas with sea views, while inland the hillside above town has stone-built houses with cool breezes and panoramic views over Mirabello Bay.

Day trips from Elounda

The signature excursion is the short boat ride to Spinalonga, the fortified Venetian island that later served as a leper colony and inspired Victoria Hislop's novel The Island. Most boats from Elounda or Plaka harbour combine the visit with a swim at Kolokytha bay. The lakeside town of Agios Nikolaos, 10 minutes south, makes a relaxed half-day for shopping and harbour-front dining. Inland, the Lasithi Plateau and the Cave of Zeus on Mount Dikti are a memorable mountain drive, while east the palm grove at Vai and the Minoan ruins of Kato Zakros take a longer day. Ierapetra and a summer boat to Chrissi island open up Crete's south coast, and Heraklion and Knossos are within reach for a culture-focused day.

Practical tips for visiting Elounda

Elounda runs on euros and cards are accepted everywhere, though the boat to Spinalonga and small village tavernas still favour cash. Greek is the local language but English is fluent across the resort scene. Smart-casual dress is the norm in hotel restaurants in the evening. Renting a car gives the most flexibility but is not essential if you plan to stay at one resort and let transfers handle excursions. The bay is sheltered, so swimming conditions are calm most days. Late May to mid-October is the safest window for warm sea swimming.

Frequently asked about Elounda

Is Elounda a nice part of Crete?

Yes. Elounda sits on the Mirabello Gulf with calm, clear water and views of the Spinalonga peninsula, and it has become Crete's most upscale coastal area. Expect luxury resorts, fine dining, and a quieter atmosphere than the busier north-coast towns.

Where should I stay in Elounda?

Most properties line the coastline north of the village toward Plaka, with private beaches, spas, and Mirabello Bay views. Staying in the village centre puts you closer to tavernas and the small harbour, while resort areas suit travellers who want all-inclusive comfort.

How long is the transfer from Heraklion to Elounda?

The drive from Heraklion International Airport to Elounda takes around 60 to 75 minutes along the national highway. Sitia airport is closer if your flight allows, but most travellers fly into Heraklion.

Yes. Boat trips to Spinalonga, swimming on quiet pebble beaches, walks along the seafront, and exploring nearby Agios Nikolaos give you plenty of variety. The wider Mirabello Bay area also has hiking, sea kayaking, and excellent fish tavernas.

Is Elounda good for couples?

Very much so. The bay is calm, many of the stays are adults-focused with private terraces and sunset views, and the dining scene is among the best on Crete. It is a popular honeymoon destination from spring through early autumn.
